The C-FARMS project

31.01.2022

On December 20, 2021, the C-FARMs - Carbon Farming Certification System project was officially launched, funded by the European Commission under the LIFE program , a funding instrument of the European Union designed to support the implementation of projects dedicated to the environment and to contrasting the climate change.

The project, lasting 18 months and of which Terrasystem is a partner, aims to promote Carbon Farming practices through an improved knowledge system and through a proposal for a regulatory framework for the certification of carbon removals based on solid and transparent carbon accounting in connection with the national greenhouse gas inventory.

    The objectives of C-Farms are:
  1. The creation of the high resolution demonstrative geospatial information system (GIS-FARMs) and a web application that will allow to assess the mitigation potential of the sector at a territorial and farm level.
  2. The development of a regulatory framework for a carbon certification system in collaboration with relevant actors and institutions.
  3. The design and implementation of targeted payments for the application of Carbon Farming practices

The project also promotes digitization and the use of EU products such as the Copernicus Earth Observation Services and the LUCAS database.

To achieve its objectives, C-FARM will involve public institutions, universities, research centers, private companies, farmers and wood industries that work specifically on issues related to the LULUCF sector. Furthermore, the project will also involve the institutions with official responsibility for the Greenhouse Gas Inventory, the offices of the regional authorities dealing with agricultural issues and the institutions dealing with certification systems.

Partners of the project are FederlegnoArredo (head), Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC), Confagricoltura (CGAI), Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l'analisi dell'economia agraria (CREA), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes - Italia (PEFC), non-profit association that promotes sustainable forest management through PEFC certification, Rete Clima, Terrasystem srl, university spin-off of the University of Tuscia in Viterbo and University of Tuscia (UNITUS).

The involvement as stakeholder of the regional authorities and of all the institutions dealing with GHG inventory (ISPRA, ISMEA) and on issues related to the agricultural sector will allow to identify, share and maximize the potential of the existing knowledge that will be used for the creation of the tool GIS-FARMs.
